La Esmeralda is a small family farm shaped by quiet persistence rather than reinvention. Owned and operated by Cesar Buesaquillo, the farm sits in the hills above Buenavista in Quindío, a region long associated with traditional Colombian coffee growing. Like many producers of his generation, Cesar inherited both land and responsibility early, choosing to focus on careful farm management and consistent washed production rather than radical experimentation. Over time, La Esmeralda has become a steady, dependable source of clean, expressive coffees that reflect both place and process.
The farm benefits from Quindío’s temperate mountain climate, where moderate altitudes, fertile volcanic soils, and predictable rainfall create ideal conditions for slow, even cherry maturation. Days are warm without excess heat, while cooler nights help preserve acidity and structure in the coffee. Castillo, a variety widely planted throughout Colombia, thrives here under attentive cultivation. Cherries are selectively harvested and processed on site using a classic washed method, with controlled fermentation followed by patio drying to lock in clarity and sweetness.
The resulting cup is a clear expression of both region and restraint. Pronounced jasmine aromatics and sweet citrus notes sit comfortably alongside almond, and gentle apricot and caramel sweetness, finishing clean and composed. Rather than pushing extremes, this coffee rewards balance and precision — a hallmark of well-executed washed Colombian coffee.
